"Lead with Science"

UNEP and UNFCCC (2023:31). The Sustainable Fashion Communication Playbook

"The basis of sustainable fashion communication is a commitment to being evidence-based and data-driven [...] communicators should be thinking about reliable, relevant, clear, accessible and transparent information as to what goes into each product, covering both environmental and social issues."

soundofgarments offers strategic advice, research, workshops and presentations for fashion companies, sourcing agents, suppliers, NGOs,  governments, multistakeholder initiatives and  international institutions in the following key areas:

  • sustainable supply chain policy, strategy and roadmap

  • human rights and environmental due diligence in supply chains through social and environmental risk management in accordance with OECD and UNGP Guidelines.

  • sustainable business models (rental, resale, repair, remake), product service systems

  • (sustainable) consumer behaviour and shifts.

Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) is the “management of material, information and capital flows as well as cooperation among companies along the Supply Chain while integrating goals from all three dimensions of sustainable development, i.e., economic, environmental and social, which are derived from customer and stakeholder requirements"
Seuring and Müller (2008:1700)
Stakeholder pressures on fashion companies never have been so powerful

  • Legislation and policies: the EU regulations and directives require corporate sustainability due diligence to address adverse effects on human rights and environment.

  • Consumers: understanding consumer culture and shifts is critical, as consumers scrutinize the current fashion system and demand accountability more than ever before.

  • Competition: competitiveness in the fashion industry will be redefined, forcing companies to grow responsibly by providing positive impact on human and nature.

  • NGOs and academia: act as watchdogs for social and environmental justice, provide data and evidence on adverse impacts of global value chains, disclose information and hold businesses accountable.

I will help your business to navigate through latest national and EU regulations and frameworks including:
  • EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD)
  • EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)
  • German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetz, LkSG)
  • OECD and UNGP Guidelines(
  • EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles

Building on my expertise, I translate and communicate critical sustainability insights, policies and strategies to various stakeholders

In light of my sustainability track in the fashion industry, I experienced a serious disconnection of science and its contribution to the real world.

Bridging the gap.

As this gap can only be addressed collectively, it is essential to provide access to science-based models on social and environmental responsibility to every stakeholder in the fashion supply chain.

"Deniz brings the good and bad sides of supply chain sustainability issues in the fashion industry straight to the point, knowing both sides of the medal – procurement and the upstream supply chain actors."

Pia Pinkawa, Sustainable Supply Chain and Communication Expert (2022)

We started woking together in light of the World Sustainable Procurement Day (2022) on sustainable transformation of Fashion, in which he was a panelist. Deniz brings the good and bad sides of supply chain sustainability issues in the fashion industry straight to the point, knowing both sides of the medal – procurement and the upstream supply chain actors. His first hand research insights on the real conditions and his knowledge on buyer-supplier relationships are intriguing and critical, but help to change the perspectives and address social and environmental issues in the supply chain effectively. He’s an inspiring and exceptional speaker and I’m really looking forward to further collaborations with Deniz to drive together sustainable procurement practices forward."

Pia Pinkawa, Sustainable Supply Chain and Communication Expert (2022)

"Dr. Deniz Köksal is a truly exceptional speaker [...] One student remarked that it was the best presentation she had ever attended as a student at our University!"

Li Zhao, Assistant ProfessoR, Textile and Apparel Management, University of Missouri (2021)

"Dr. Deniz Köksal is a truly exceptional speaker. His expertise in the area of fashion sustainability and transparency is beyond reproach. But, even better, is his ability to connect with people at their level. His presentation inspired my students. One student remarked that it was: the best presentation she had ever attended as a student at our University!"

Li Zhao, Assistant Professor, Textile and Apparel Management, University of Missouri (2021)

"Wer großes Wissen, erfrischenden Pragmatismus und klugen Wortwitz für seine veranstaltungen sucht, sollte Dr. Deniz Köksal auf jeden Fall einladen!"

SEZ, Stiftung Entwicklung & Zusammenarbeit BW (2019)
